Eagles fall to Alumni; 4-1

Fans got their first look at the 2009-2010 Kennett Eagles Saturday night at the Ham Arena when the young Eagles took to the ice against the Kennett Hockey Alumni, and the 148 fans who attended had to like what they saw. While the Eagles eventually fell to the Alumni 4-1, if Saturday night is what kind of play we can expect from the Eagles, fans will be entertained.

Senior Ricky Gaudreau started in net and was spectacular as usual, keeping the Eagles in the game early. At 6:59 of the first period the Eagles got on the board when Bryan Lamontagne skated the puck over the blue line and released a wicked snap shot that hit just under the cross bar. Kevin Murphy picked up the assist on the goal. The Alumni tied the game at 9:54 off a face-off. Mark Lane won the face-off right to Garrett Meador who snapped a shot past Gaudreau to make it 1-1. That is how the teams would go the dressing room.

Nick Kevlin took over for Gaudreau in the 2nd. The Eagles began to get their skating legs and had some good scoring chances, but just couldn’t beat Chris Kevlin. With five minutes to play, Jonny Parkhurst relieved Kevlin in net and was greeted rudely by the Alumni. Mike Skelton came down the right hand side and snapped a bad angle shot that beat Parkhurst to make it 2-1. Less then thirty seconds later Parkhurst got caught out of the net and Justin Clements made him pay, scoring to make it 3-1 headed to the locker room.

The third period was even once again, with solid plays at both ends of the ice. The fourth and final goalie for the Eagles John Bishop came into the game with ten minutes to play and was solid. With 3:31 to play Bishop made the save of the night, unfortunately one of his players was sliding into him as he made the glove save and his glove went into the net. Overall coach Lane liked what he saw in all aspects of the game. “I was really pleased with the way the young kids played. We have only had three practices, and have had no work on our breakout or power play, so given that, it was a good start.” The Eagles will practice four times this week before heading to the Dover Jamboree Saturday where they will face Lebanon, Somersworth, Laconia and Dover.

Eagles look solid in Jamboree

The Kennett Eagles had what coach Mike Lane described as a “solid performance” on Saturday night at the annual Dover Jamboree, but stressed to his players after the night “there is a lot of work still to do.” Thirteen teams participated in the jamboree including three other Division III squads, Somersworth, Portsmouth and Laconia. Other teams included Division II teams Dover, Spaulding, Keene, Alvirine, Winnacunette, Lebanon, Oyster River and Division I teams St Thomas and Lononderry.

The Eagles opened up action against Division II semi-finalist a year ago Lebanon. Coach Lane started sophomore John Bishop in net and the youngster did not disappoint, making seven saves in the 0-0 tie. The Eagles seem to carry play for the first half of action (games are twenty minutes running time), but go into penalty trouble late. Captains Griffin Meador and Taylor Cyr led the offensive with a couple of scoring chances each.

In game two of the night the Eagles met division rival the Somersworth Hilltoppers. Nick Kevlin started in net and played well. With 7:50 remaining in the period the Hilltoppers got on the board off a rebound in front of Kevlin. The Eagles would tie the game with one minute remaining when Logan Spoor stepped in from the blue line and ripped a snap shot past Kate Peterson. The Eagles would net the eventual game winner just twenty seconds later when Kevin Murphy found Meador streaking down the left side. The senior captain made no mistake beating Peterson high to the stick side. That’s the way this one would end, but coach Lane praised the Hilltoppers who were playing without one of the most talented players in the division Jaret Canney. “They are a very good squad as always, the thing that sticks out this year is they are very balanced. They are going to be there at the end just like every season.”

The Eagles received a surprise just five minutes before they took the ice versus Laconia as the schedule was switched and they would play division II Keene. The surprise didn’t affect the Eagles who came out flying. Jonny Parkhurst was in net and stopped the only shot he saw in the period. Freshman Connor Todd moved up to play with Murphy and Meador and scored a goal with 4:45 remaining. The Eagles held onto the lead and won 1-0.

The Eagles closed out the night against Division II power house Dover and had to fight for everything. Shorthanded for eleven of the eleven minutes, senior captain Ricky Gaudreau was spectacular in net making 16 saves in the 0-0 tie.

Overall coach Lane was happy with the teams effort and is looking forward to their final pre-season test, a trip north to Berlin to meet Division I Berlin. “This should be a good test for our team. We certainly can skate with any team in the Division, the question is can we play at a physical level. There is not better way to find that out then playing Berlin.”

The Eagles open the season Monday (December 14th) when they travel to Nashua to meet Souhegan.

At Tri-Town Arena Pembroke, Bedford, Hollis Brookline, Souhegan, Belmont-Gilford and Monadnock participated in the Pembroke jamboree. Reports show Bedford may be the team to beat, but all six teams had great showings.

Eagles drop a close one to the Mountaineers; Set sights on Souhegan

The Kennett Eagles closed out the pre-season Tuesday night with a trip north to Berlin to face division one Berlin and had a very solid showing, falling in the end 3-2. Nate Bisson scored his second goal of the game on the power play with 11:48 remaining in the third, beating Nick Kevlin blocker side for the game winner.

Senior Captain Ricky Gaudreau started between the pipes and once again proved to be one of the best in the state turning away all 22 shots he faced in the first period. “Ricky is special, I probably sound like a broken record, but the kid is just special,” said Head Coach Mike Lane. At the other end of the ice the Eagles didn’t have nearly as many chances but took advantage of the ones they did have. Logan Spoor banged home a power play goal off a rebound from a Griffin Meador shot to make it 1-0 with 6:28 to go in the first period. That’s how the teams would go their locker rooms after one period.

In the second the Eagles turned to sophomore John Bishop and the rookie was sparkling in net early on, making many key saves. Berlin got to the rookie with 8:34 to go on a power play. The Eagles got caught running around in their own zone and left Shane Bertnard wide open in front of the net, he put the puck just under the cross bar to tie the game 1-1. The Eagles would take the lead with 2:00 minutes remaining in the second when their scrappy “blue” line worked a perfect breakout, dump and chase and that turned into a goal. Cody Richard hit a streaking Justin Munck who got the puck deep. Munck followed by getting the puck and finding Chris King. King swung around the high slot and found Bryan Lamontagne who ripped a shot over the goalies shoulder. Berlin would answer just over a minute later when the Eagles turned the puck over in their own zone. Bisson came from behind the net and beat Bishop to make it 2-2 after two. Bishop made 18 saves in the period.

In the third the Eagles went to Kevlin in net. The junior was solid in net, only allowing one hiccup, allowing a shot to beat him blocker side. Kevlin made 9 saves before giving way to Jonny Parkhurst who made 5 saves. The Eagles spent much of the third period in the penalty box. Overall, Coach Lane was happy with the results. “This was a good opportunity to play everyone, and see what everyone had. I was happy with the effort, especially from the blue and green lines (all sophomores and freshman). I thought they skated well. I thought our defense played well too.”

The Eagles will have today off due to the weather and get back to work tomorrow as they eye a State Championship re-match with Souhegan Monday in Nashua. “The kids are excited. Souhegan is going to be a good test for us. A lot of people think they are going to be down because they lost that first line, but they are very well coached and they return two of the best defenseman in the league in Carroll and Rafferty. As long as I have been playing in high school and coaching, in all sports, Souhegan is good!” The puck is set to drop at the Conway Arena at 5:20 p.m.

Eagles Raise Banner; Beat Somersworth 5-1

The Kennett Eagles officially closed the door on 2009 Saturday night with a ten minute pre-game ceremony where they unveiled their State Championship Banner.  Following the ceremony, the Eagles hosted Somersworth in a battle of 1-0-0 teams, and the boys from Conway came with  high intensity; scoring two first period goals en route to a 5-1 win at the Ham arena.

Senior Griffin Meador got the Eagles on the board first at 4:17 of the first.  Meador found a loose puck in front of the Somersworth goal and slid it home to make it 1-0. Meador doubled the lead to 2-0 less then two minutes later with a power play goal. Dillon Smith hit Meador, who was streaking down the left side.  Meador snapped a shot through the five hole for the goal.  “Griff was flying tonight,” said head coach Michael Lane.  “He really set the tone tonight with his skating legs.”

In the second period, the Eagles lost senior defenseman and Captain Bryan Lamontagne to a knee injury.  The Eagles were forced to mix and match defensemen throughout the period.  “Losing a kid like Bryan is tough,” said Lane.  “He is involved in every aspect of our game;  -power play, short handed, five on five; so losing him obviously affected us for a bit; but the kids did a good job of adjusting.”

In the third the Eagles extended their lead to 3-0 when Josh Potter worked hard in the corner and slid a fine pass across to Kevin Murphy.  Murphy slammed it home just under the cross bar.  Somersworth didn’t quit though, and less then three minutes later on the power play. Carl Anderson took a snap shot from the point which beat Gaudreau between the legs.  Gaudreau never saw the shot.  Forty two seconds later on a power play of their own, the Eagles regained the three goal cushion.  Taylor Cyr took a shot which was stopped, but Logan Spoor was right there to bang home the rebound to make it 4-1.  Less then two minutes later, again, on the power play, the Eagles made it 5-1. Meador and Dillon Smith set up Cyr who roofed a back hand shot for the goal.

“I have not slept much this week,” said Lane.  “This was a special night with the ceremony, but I wanted to make sure they stayed focused on Somersworth.  They are a great team who we respect a lot.  The kids did a great job of enjoying the ceremony, but then focusing on the game.”

The Eagles will have Sunday off before returning to action Monday when they travel to Laconia to meet rival Sachems.  “This should be another good test for us; hopefully we continue to improve,” said Lane.  The puck drops at Laconia Ice Arena at 8:00 p.m.

Eagles skate into Christmas Break at 3-0; Beat Sachems 8-1

The Kennett Eagles skated into the Christmas break Monday night just how they wanted to, unbeaten.  The Eagles improved to 3-0 on the young season with an 8-1 win over the Laconia Sachems Monday night at the Laconia Ice Arena.  Eleven different Eagles registered a point and sophomore John Bishop picked up his first career win in net making five saves.

The night did not start out very well.  Just fifty three seconds into the game, the Eagles turned the puck over in their own zone and Tom Missert walked in alone and beat Bishop high glove side for a 1-0 lead.  The lead was short lived however, as less then two minutes later the Eagles answered when freshman Connor Todd picked up his first career goal, banging home a rebound of a Justin Munck shot.  Dillon Smith picked up the second assist on the play. The Eagles have started a trend of answering goals quickly.  Of the six goals allowed this season by the Eagles, three of rhem have been scored within the next two minutes, including twice within one minute.  Just over five minutes into the period, on the power play, Dillon Smith snapped a shot off from the point.  Sachem goalie Nolan Canfield never saw the shot and it beat him blocker side for a 2-1 lead.  Later in the first, just after a Laconia penalty had expired, Chuckie Smith dug the puck out of the corner and fed Kevin Murphy.  Murphy slid a pass across the crease to Logan Spoor, who one timed it home for a 3-1 lead.  With ten seconds remaining in the period, the Eagles got caught in the offensive zone and Ian Bastray broke down the right side on a semi breakaway.  Bishop stood tall and made a fine save to send the Eagles to the locker room up 3-1.

In the second, the Eagles extended their lead to 4-1 on a nice rush by Chuckie Smith. Smith beat the defenseman wide to the right side and put a beautiful snap shot just under the cross bar.  The Eagles made it 5-1 later in the period on the power play when Griffin Meador worked a fine give-and-go with Dillon Smith; the freshman weaved to the front of the net and beat Canfield blocker side.  Just over a minute later, Munck picked off a cross ice pass and snapped it by Canfield blocker side to make it 6-1.  The goal was Munck's first career goal.  That’s the way the teams headed to the dressing room.

In the third Chuckie Smith Scored his second of the game with a fine rush down the left hand side of the ice.  He slid it between the goalies legs to make it 7-1.  Taylor Cyr and Chris King got the assists on the play.  The Eagles closed out the scoring with twenty three seconds remaining when freshman James Gallo raced down the right side and slid a shot through Canfields legs for an 8-1 final. The Eagles held the Sachems to just two shots over the final two periods. “We played very well after the first five minutes,” said Head Coach Michael Lane. “In the first we didn’t move the puck; we were trying to be too cute with the puck, but as the game went on, I was very happy with the effort. You can see a huge improvement on all of our first year players through the first three games.”

The Eagles will take some time off to enjoy the Christmas Holiday. They return to the ice Sunday to practice and prepare for the Maine High School Hockey Invitational.  The Eagles are one of four New Hampshire schools attending (Spaulding D 2, Berlin D 1 & Hanover D 1).  The Eagles will play Monday at 10 a.m. in Biddeford against Edward Little High School.  Tuesday they play at USM at 10 a.m. against Westbrook High School and close out the tournament Tuesday afternoon at 4 p.m. when they play Deering High School. The Eagles return to league play when they travel to Hollis Brookline January 2nd.  Including the Christmas Tournament, the Eagles are in the midst of a six game road trip. They do not return to play at home until January 9th when they host John Stark.

Eagles shut-out Cougars  5-0

Gaudreau earns 13th career shut-out; Cyr nets 50th career goal

The Kennett Eagles made the three hour plus trip to Winchendon Massachusetts to face the Conval Cougars worth it Monday night, shutting out the Cougars 5-0, moving to 4-0-0 in Division III play.  Ricky Gaudreau made 19 saves to earn the shut-out while Griffin Meador scored three goals and Taylor Cyr scored his 50th career goal.  Logan Spoor netted the other goal in the win.

The Eagles got on the board at 8:33 of the first period when Cyr went behind the Cougar net, dug the puck out, circled off the left face-off circle and snapped a shot home for a 1-0 lead. “That was a Taylor Cyr goal,” said Head Coach Michael Lane.  “Hard work in the corner, leading to a goal, great to see.”   That’s the way the game would head into the first intermission.

In the second period it became the Griffin Meador show for nineteen seconds. The senior captain scored just 2:42 into the second off a beautiful feed from freshman Dillon Smith. Smith made a no look pass to a wide open Meador who beat the Cougar goalie blocker side.  Nineteen seconds later Meador scored again, this time off a nice feed from Kevin Murphy.

In the third the Eagles put the game out of reach quickly on the power play. At just :51 seconds of the period Spoor picked up a rebound of a Meador shot and banged it home, Terry O’Reilly style, for a 4-0 lead.  Cyr picked up the second assist on the play. At 4:11 of the third Meador picked up the hat trick, taking a Cyr pass and beating the goalie low blocker side for a 5-0 lead.  Bryan Lamontagne picked up the second assist.  Gaudreau preserved the shut-out late in the third with two key saves on a Conval power play.

“Another good team win, everyone played a lot,” said Lane.  “All four lines saw ice time and contributed to the win,” he continued.  The Eagles finally return home Friday to host the John Stark Generals at the Ham Arena, the puck drops at 4:40.  “We are all looking forward to coming home and playing in front of a home crowd,” said Lane.  “John Stark should be a good test for us.”

2nd Period lift Eagles past Generals 7-0

The Kennett Eagles scored four goals in the first two minutes and seven seconds of the second period Saturday night and cruised to a 7-0 win over the John Stark Generals at the Ham Arena in Conway.  Ricky Gaudreau made 18 saves for his second straight shut-out while Bryan Lamontagne scored three power play goals.  “I really thought we played well Saturday,” said head coach Michael Lane.  “The kids did a good job of beating the hard fore-check that John Stark ran.”

The Eagles got on the board at 7:37 of the first on the power play.  Taylor Cyr won the face-off to Griffin Meador.  Meador slid the puck to the point where Lamontagne snapped a shot off through a screen.  The Generals goalie never saw it and it beat him five hole for a 1-0 lead.  The game would stay that way headed to the dressing room.

It didn’t take the Eagles long to put the game out of reach. Just six seconds into the second period Kevin Murphy won the face-off to himself, gained the blue line and found Meador on the left post who tipped in a nice pass to make it 2-0.   Just eleven seconds later the Eagles made it 3-0.  Again off the face-off Murphy gained control of the puck, beat the Generals defenseman wide.  Murphy took a shot which was stopped but Cyr was right on the top of the crease and banged home the rebound.  Just over a minute later Connor Todd fed Logan Spoor at the point, the junior took a shot which Josh Potter deflected home for a 4-0 lead.  Twenty seven seconds later on the power play Cyr won a face-off to Meador who came off the half wall and whistled a shot over the Generals goalies shoulder for a 5-0 lead.  “Somebody asked me what I said to get the kids fired up between periods, but the truth is we just went in, made our normal game adjustments and the kids came out flying.  They deserve all the credit,” said Lane.  The remainder of the period was penalty filled with the Eagles having to kill off eight minutes of penalty time.  Gaudreau was great including many key saves on two 5-3 power plays for the Generals.

The Eagles made it 6-0 early in the third on the power play with a beautiful tick tack toe goal between defenseman Dillon Smith and Lamontagne.  The play went Smith to Lamontagne, back to Smith and then finally back to Lamontagne who blistered home a one timer for the goal.  The Eagles closed out the scoring with just over a minute to play when Lamontagne screen shot found the back of the net. Murphy picked up the only assist on the play.

Lane was happy with the effort of everyone.  “Our young guys continue to improve and do the little things well.  We have a tough week ahead (@ Pembroke & Home versus Souhegan), I think the guys are ready for it,” said Lane.  The Eagles will be at Tri Town Arena to play Pembroke Wednesday, they return home to play the Sabers of Souhegan Saturday, the puck drops at 4:20 p.m.

A NIGHT OF 100’S

It was a night for a 100’s Wednesday night at Tri-Town Arena in Hooksett.   Captains Griffin Meador and Taylor Cyr each registered their 100th career points in helping the Eagles to a 10-0 win over Pembroke.  Ricky Gaudreau made 22 saves in the win to earn his 3rd straight shut-out.

With the score already 1-0 Cyr earned his 100th career point with 7:07 remaining in the first when he one timed home a nice pass from Chris King.   Meador earned his 100th point in the second period on a breakaway goal.   Both Cyr and Meador are four year players for the Eagles and have both been vital parts of the team’s success over the past four seasons.  “It is something they should both be very proud of,” said head coach Michael Lane.  “It represents not only their commitment to the program but also their teammates.”

The Eagles also got scoring help from Senior captain Bryan Lamontagne who scored a shorthanded goal.  Sophomores Kevin Murphy, Chris King and Cody Richard each had single goals.  Matt Kelly and Nick Massa both scored their first career goals.

The Eagles are back in action Saturday when they host rival Souhegan for 4:20 pm contest at the Ham Arena.  “It should be a very good test for us,” said head coach Michael Lane. “Souhegan is playing very good hockey right now.  We are going to have to bring our best game.”

Eagles beat Souhegan 6-1; Season Record Now 7-0

The Kennett Eagles beat their arch rival the Souhegan Sabers Saturday night in front of a crowd of just under 300 at the Ham Arena 6-1.  In the process the Eagles swept the two regular season meetings (7-4 win on December 14th).

The Eagles got on the board first at 10:48 of the first with a hard working goal. Cody Richard on the fore-check took out a Saber defenseman, leaving the puck for Kevin Murphy.  Murphy slid a pass to Griffin Meador. Meador took a shot which was stopped by Erik Hayden but Richard crashed the net and banged home the rebound for a 1-0 lead.  The Eagles would extend the lead to 2-0 in the final minute of the first on a very similar goal.  Chuckie Smith found Taylor Cyr in front of the net.  Cyr took a shot which was stopped by Hayden but Chris King was there to knock it home for a 2-0 lead headed to the dressing room.  “As a coach you really like to see goals like that,” said head coach Michael Lane.  Its great to see kids get paid off for their hard work, both line were rewarded.”

The Sabers would cut the lead to 2-1 early in the second when Quinn Carroll cut loose on a breakaway and beat Ricky Gaudreau.  It was the first goal Gaudreau had allowed in league play since the Somersworth game.  The Eagles were quick to answer, again the fore-check the Eagles caused a turnover and Murphy came out from behind the net and stuffed it home for a 3-1 lead.  That’s the way the game would head into the third period.

In the third the Eagles would extend the lead to 4-1 on a beautiful give and go goal by Meador.  Murphy picked up the assist on the play.  Murphy would make it 5-1 with 3:31 to play on a nice individual effort and Smith closed out the scoring with a power play goal with :09 seconds remaining.

The win moves the Eagles to 7-0 and sets up the match-up of the season in Division III this Saturday when the 7-0 Bedford Bull Dogs come to town for a 4:20 puck drop.  “A lot of people are looking at this game as the game of the season, we are not, it’s just another regular season game,” said Lane. “Our goal is to be clicking on all cylinders when we get to March, that’s what working towards.”

Eagles 7   - Bedford Bulldogs 3

Eagles beat Bedford; Now only unbeaten in Division III

In front of a record crowd of over 500 the Kennett Eagles became the only unbeaten left in Division III and one of only two in the entire state (Merrimack Division II the other), beating the Bedford Bull Dogs 7-3.  “It was a great high school hockey game, great atmosphere, lots of emotion, it was a lot of fun,” said head coach Michael Lane.

Before the game the Eagles recognized the major sponsors on business appreciation night.  The Eagles presented signed team photo’s as well as the official team program to Evan Howland of Frechette Tire, Mark Graffam of Graffam Computer Consulting  -Graffam.com, Chris Moneypenney of Ossipee Napa and Jonathan Rivers of Indian Mound Golf Course and the Rivers Memorial Fund.  Ken Janos of  Brandli’s, as well as representatives of Bailey’s Conway Napa and Redstone Napa could not attend. Go to the News and Events page for photos.

The Eagles set the tone for the game right off the opening face off and cracked the scoreboard just sixty five seconds into the game when Taylor Cyr banged home a rebound.  “That was just a hard working goal by all five guys on the ice, they crashed the net and really got the building going,” said Lane.   The lead was short lived though as off a blocked shot Mike Ahern walked in alone on Ricky Gaudreau and beat him low to the glove side.  The Eagles answered with 5:34 to go in the first when Bryan Lamontagne took a shot from the point that Bedford goalie Ben Firman never saw.  The shot beat him blocker side to make it 2-1.  “Cody Richard set a great screen there, he had a great night again and Lamontagne put the puck on net, little things but all done correctly,” said Lane.  Three minutes later Chris King blocked a shot and then with hustle drew a penalty.  On the power play the Eagles had a perfect tick tack toe goal where all five guys on the ice touched the puck.  The end result was a cross ice pass to Cyr who one timed home his second goal of the game to make it 3-1 headed to the first intermission. “That’s the type of goal you wish you could give four assists, Dillon (Smith) and Logan (Spoor) each started the play, and Lamontagne, Meador (Griffin) and Cyr finished it, just a great power play goal,” said Lane.

In the second period the Eagles got into penalty trouble and Bedford made the Eagles pay when Pat Spenard slid a puck past Gaudreau to make it 3-2. The Eagles though like they have all season answered less then a minute later when Meador streaked down the left side and snapped a shot past Firman to make it 4-2, Matt Kelly picked up the assist on the play.  Just over three minutes later Meador dug the puck out of the corner and found Kevin Murphy who continues his monster sophomore campaign. Murphy banged it home to make it 5-2 headed to the dressing room.  “I think the kids have done a really good job of finishing periods this season, for example we scored a goal in all three periods in the final two minutes tonight, that’s tough to head the dressing room if you do that,” said Lane.

In the third the Eagles made it 6-2 on another Murphy goal again coming from Meador. The Bull Dogs answered on the power play just under two minutes later but the Eagles defense buckled down and held the Bull Dogs off the score sheet the rest of the evening. “Another great effort on the blue line by Spoor, Smith Kelly and Lamontagne, I think Dillon broke up a number of one on one’s, Matt was tough behind the net, Logan was physical as always and Bryan was great on the PK, they all are just playing so well,” said Lane. Meador closed out the scoring with 1:07 to go on a nice rush, beating Firman with a snap shot.  “Up and down the line-up it was a great effort, I thought Taylor set the tone, kids like Chris and Cody followed with the aggressive play, Griffin, Kevin and Chuckie (Smith) used their speed and our blue line did all the right things (Josh Potter, Connor Todd and Justin Munck), overall we played great,” said Lane.

The Eagles are off until Saturday when the Laconia Sachems come to town, the puck drops at 4:20 p.m.

Eagles survive scare at Monadnock; win 7-2

The Kennett Eagles trailed for the longest stretch of hockey they have all season Wednesday night at Monadnock, falling behind just 1:26 into the game and not tying the game until :40 seconds remaining in the first. Blame it on the bus legs from the over three hour trip, but the bottom line was the Eagles got it together late in the second and pulled away for a 7-2 win, improving their record in division III to 12-0-0. “This is one of those nights we are happy to get a win and get out of town,” said head coach Michael Lane. “This is a tough building to play in (Cheshire Fair Grounds), but we just didn’t skate for the first twenty five minutes or so, if you do that any team can beat you.”

It was a Brennen Seymour screen shot from the point that Ricky Gaudreau never saw that opened the scoring just over a minute into action. Monadnock was fired up celebrating their senior night and it showed on the ice as they played with a lot of emotion. The Eagles on the other hand were flat, moving the puck slow out of their own end and struggled to get any quality scoring chances on Monadnock goalkeeper Kyle Naeck. However the Eagles caught a break with just under a minute to go in the first. Shorthanded Dillon Smith took a cross ice pass from Taylor Cyr and beat Naeck with a wrist shot through the legs to make it 1-1 headed to the first intermission. “Given our first period effort I was happy we were tied 1-1, I don’t think we deserved that result,” said Lane.

The Eagles opened the second on the power play and cashed in when Logan Spoor banged home a shot to make it 2-1. Cyr picked up the assist on the play. Monadnock came back just under three minutes later when Ray Miller walked in off the half wall and beat Gaudreau with another screen shot. The Eagles took the lead back late in the second when Griffin Meador and Kevin Murphy scored on a beautiful give and go. “I had just said to Pete (Hall) on the bench we need Griff to step it up and about twenty seconds later he scored,” said Lane. The Eagles were not out of the woods though as less then a minute later a bad bounce off the boards in the Eagles offensive zone sprung Miller on a breakaway. Bryan Lamontagne dove and tripped Miller who was awarded a penalty shot. Miller made a very nice move to his back hand but Gaudreau like a cat beat him to the post and stopped the attempt. From there the momentum shifted and the Eagles took control of the game. With just one second remaining in the second the Eagles made it 4-2 when Meador found Murphy on the far post, the sophomore buried it for the goal. “I think that really hurt them (Monadnock),” said Lane. “They had played so hard and to make it a two goal game at the buzzer is tough.”

In the third the Eagles made it 5-2 just over a minute into the period when Chris King beat Naeck with a wrist shot five hole, Spoor picked up the assist. Later Cyr scored to make it 6-2 when King, Chuckie Smith and Cyr ran a nice cycle down low with the puck ending up on Cyr’s stick. The scoring was closed out when Meador scored off a feed from Dillon Smith and Cody Richard to make it 7-2.

The Eagles now enter a tough home stretch to the play-offs where they will play their final six games in twelve days. Four of the games will be home and home series, with the first starting Monday night when the Eagles host Belmont Gilford at the Ham Arena at 4:20 p.m. Belmont Gilford is 9-2-1 and currently sits in 3rd place in the Division III standings. “They have a very solid program,” said Lane. “They are well coached, disciplined and are building off the success of the past two seasons. They have made the play-offs the past two seasons and I think they are ready to take the next step and make it to the top four this year, it should be a couple of great games.”

A look at the play-off picture.

Currently in Division III five teams have punched their ticket to the post season (Kennett, Bedford, Belmont-Gilford, John Stark & Somersworth). Portsmouth needs just two points and Souhegan three points to clinch a spot. Hollis Brookline who is looking to secure the final spot (currently in 8th) needs just four points. Monadnock, Moultonborough and Conval are all on the outside looking in right now, needing to pretty much run the table and hope for help. Continue to monitor kennetteagleshockey.com for updated play-off information as we move closer to the close of the regular season.

Eagles skate to 11-0 with win over Clippers

The Kennett Eagles beat up on the Portsmouth Clippers Saturday night before a crowd of 250 at the Ham Arena, moving to 11-0 on the season. The Eagles scored three goals in the final five minutes of the first period and scored five second period goals on route to the 9-0 win. “With the exception of the Bedford game I think this is the best game we have played all season,” said head coach Michael Lane. “All four lines played very well and the defense was solid in front of Ricky.”

The Eagles came out flying and peppered Portsmouth goalie Jeremy O’Keefe with the first nine shots of the game, but the Eagles could not get on the board. At the other end of the ice Ricky Gaudreau was forced to make two big saves at the mid way point of the period from right between the hash marks. The Eagles fed off that emotion and with 4:51 remaining in the period Griffin Meador picked up a rebound off a Kevin Murphy shot and flipped it under the cross bar for a 1-0 lead. Just over a minute later Bryan Lamontagne took a feed from Dillon Smith and walked in from the point and snapped a shot past O’Keefe’s blocker to make it 2-0. Smith made it 3-0 sixty one seconds later on the power play when he walked off the half wall and put the puck short side for a power play goal. “Dillon has had a great year on the blue line,” said Lane. “He is so solid and composed with the puck for a freshman.”

The Eagles came out flying in the second and quickly made it 4-0 when Meador found Murphy in the slot for a one timer that went five hole. The game went to 5-0 when Lamontagne blistered a shot from the point. James Gallo and Gabe Lee got the assists on the play. Josh Potter made it 6-0 on the power play, banging home a rebound of Lamontagne shot. “Josh is not afraid to go to the tough places to score goals, he got beat up that shift but was rewarded for his hard work, that’s great to see,” said Lane. The Eagles made it 7-0 when Murphy one timed home another Meador pass with Cody Richard picking up the second assist on the play. Murphy completed the hat trick with 3:17 remaining in the second when a Meador shot deflected off Murphy into the net.

In the third the game became very chippy, but it was the Eagles who scored the only goal, Anthony LaRusso did the honors with five seconds remaining. The Shut-out for Gaudreau was his school record 16th, and the teams 5th this season. The news was not all good as Taylor Cyr, Potter and Connor Todd all left the game in the third period with injuries.

“The kids really came to work today,” said Lane. “Chuckie Smith had his best game of the season, Chris King and Cyr working with Chuckie had no points but all played great games. I thought our defense was very solid again and I thought that all four lines played well.” The Eagles are off until Wednesday when they travel to play Monadnock in Keene. “They sit in 9th place right now and only have five games remaining, so they are going to be a hungry team, we need to be ready for their best game.”

Eagles 13   - Laconia Sachems 0

Eagles skate past rival Laconia; now only unbeaten in all of NH

The Kennett Eagles scored five first period goals on route to a 13-0 win over Laconia High School at the Ham Arena Saturday night in front of 222 fans. The loss drops the Sachems to 1-9 on the season while the win lifts the Eagles to 9-0. The win coupled with a Merrimack High School (division II) loss, means the Eagles are the only unbeaten team remaining in the entire State. “It’s nice, but it doesn’t change the way we approach the game,” said head coach Michael Lane.

The Eagles scored early and often, with first period goals being scored by Cody Richard, Taylor Cyr who scored two, Logan Spoor on the power play and Chuckie Smith. Griffin Meador had an assist, Spoor had two assists in the period, Chris King had one, Dillon Smith had one, Cyr had one and Bryan Lamontagne had two. Jonny Parkhurst playing his first game of the season between the pipes made one save.

In the second the Eagles got goals from Anthony LaRusso (first career goal), Kevin Murphy, Cyr, Nick Massa and Dan Rivera (first career goal). Assists went to Richard who had two, Meador, Murphy, Josh Potter, Lamontagne and Gabe Lee who had two. Parkhurst made three saves.

Eagles Sweep Home & Home Series with Belmont/Gilford; Clinch Home Ice In First Round

Eagles 7  -  Belmont  Bulldogs 3

Wed Feb 17th 6:00 p.m. KHS @ Belmont Laconia Arena

The Kennett Eagles finished a sweep of a home and home series with Belmont Gilford Wednesday night at the Laconia Ice Arena, walking away with a 7-3 win. Kennett, playing shorthanded on the blue line without stand out defenseman Logan Spoor who suffered a neck injury Monday night, scored three first period goals on route to the win. The win clinches a home play-off game for the Eagles which is always a major goal for the team. “You want to play that first round game in your own barn, so to get that out of the way is nice, but there is a lot of work still to be done, we have a very tough weekend coming up,” said head coach Michael Lane.

First line center Kevin Murphy slid back to defense in place of Spoor and the Eagles shuffled their lines, putting Taylor Cyr, Griffin Meador and Chuckie Smith together for the game. The move paid off as the line scored all three first period goals. Smith scored the first on a rebound, Meador scored the second on a breakaway and Smith scored his second of the night finishing off a pretty two on one.

The second period was littered with penalties with the two teams combining for twenty two minutes combined. “I really didn’t think the second period was that different from the first, I thought both teams were playing hard and the officials called it tighter, it’s the players and coaches’ job to adjust to the officials, and neither team did a good job of that,” said Lane. Belmont Gilford cut the lead to 3-1 on a power play at 8:05 of the frame on a controversial goal. A shot went over the net and hit the glass and popped into the air. From behind the net Jeremy D’Amour knocked the puck to the front of the net with his hand, the puck hitting an Eagle defenseman and went in. The Eagles argued with point but the goal was allowed. Just fifteen seconds later the Eagles had poor face-off coverage. The Bulldog took advantage, as Cam Clairmont banged home a rebound for a 3-2 game.  Coach Michael Lane immediately called a time-out.  “I told the kids to relax and play our game - control the things we can control.  Pete and I just wanted to get them settled down, and the kids responded well,” said Lane. The Eagles drew a penalty just under a minute later and on the power play Bryan Lamontagne snapped of wrist shot just under the cross bar to make it 4-2 headed to the dressing room.

In the third Lamontagne added to the lead when a screen shot from the point beat Belmont Gilford goalie Alex Conway to the glove side. Meador made it 6-2 with a goal just over a minute later. Belmont Gilford would cut the lead to 6-3 but Smith finished the hat trick with just under two minute to play to close out the scoring. Ricky Gaudreau made 25 saves in the win, while Cyr had three assists. Lane praised the entire team for the effort Wednesday night. “It is never easy playing a home and home, Belmont Gilford is a great team, they skate hard and are tough team to play, I just thought our younger kids did a real good job sticking to the game plan and creating space for the older kids to do their thing, overall I was really happy with the win.”

The Eagles are off until Saturday where they will head to Somersworth to meet the Hilltoppers. Sunday the Eagles head to Hudson to play Hollis Brookline. “Both teams are play-off teams, it should be a great weekend of hockey,” said Lane.

A LOOK AT THE PLAY-OFFS

With Wednesday’s results it appears to be official who the eight teams participating in the play-off will be. Kennett, Bedford, Belmont Gilford, Somersworth, John Stark, Souhegan, Hollis Brookline and Portsmouth have all punched their ticket. There is a lot to be settled in the final week. Kennett has wrapped up a home play-off spot and Bedford has all but done it as well, the question is who will finish third and forth? Anyone of the teams, third through sixth, have a legitimate shot at home ice.  It should make for an exciting final ten days of hockey.

Power Play Lifts Eagles Past Belmont Gilford

 Eagles 3  -  Belmont  Bulldogs 1

Mon Feb 15th 4:20 p.m. Belmont @ KHS Ham Arena

The Kennett Eagles scored three power play goals en route to a 3-1 win Monday night at the Ham Arena over the Belmont Gilford Bull Dogs.
